Rule Upgrades, and More
All rules are stored from Synthia run to Synthia run in a synthia.xml file particular to you and thus stored in your personal storage area ( syntheyes user folder).
The exact location is determined by your operating system. The XML file details and the ground rules can be specific to a specific Synthia build, so synthia.xml must be recreated when the underlying Synthia software is updated.
To do that, Synthia keeps track of your rules (ie my rules), and keeps a copy of them as an update file ( synthia_my_rules.sia), which can re-create all your rules.
When synthia.xml must be rebuilt, your rules are recreated using the new ground rules --- a bit risky, as the ground rules may have changed from before. Rule numbers almost always change, for example.
The synthia.xml file is also rebuilt if the house rules change.
There is the possibility of various kinds of conflicts, so you might encounter errors or other problems requiring some manual updates when the rules are recreated. For
example, some of your rules may have been added as ground rules; this is not automatically detected and may result in multiple interpretation errors at present.
You can also set up manual adjustments to the rules (synthia_my_tweaks.sia ), that are applied automatically when the rules are rebuilt. These tweaks might delete unwanted ground rules, for example.
To recap, here's the full rebuild sequence:
• synthia_ground_rules.xml in the application folder,
• synthia_house_rules.sia in the application folder,
• synthia_house_rules.sia in the user's area,
• synthia_my_rules.sia in the user's area,
• synthia_my_tweaks.sia in the user's area.
Note that the factory synthia_ground_rules.xml file and synthia_my_rules.sia files are always maintained exclusively by Synthia and should never be changed manually. The synthia_house_rules and synthia_my_tweaks files are created and maintained only by you, the user, and are never changed by Synthia.
Exercise: find the synthia_my_rules.sia file and read what's in it.
Exercise: exit from Synthia, find synthia.xml, delete it, start Synthia, and watch
the rebuild.
