Coordinate System Setup with Phases

As the previous example shows, you can use the coordinate system phases to set up a coordinate system. The available coordinate phases have some very powerful capabilities. We will not describe them all here in detail, please see the Phase Reference on the SynthEyes Help menu, but will provide a brief overview here.

As with a tracker-constraint-based coordinate system setup, each scene should control the position, orientation, and scale of each camera and moving object in it.

Note : Do not attempt to partially constrain orientation with tracker constraints, then try to complete the constraints with phases. Orientation constraints during solving must either be absent or complete, ie constrain all 3 rotations. If you need to do this, add an additional temporary constraint to complete the solve, then use the phase(s) to adjust the solve as needed.

Here are some key phases you can use to set up a coordinate system. Note that in a number of cases, some parts of the coordinate system must already be set up for the phase to act as expected. If you think about what is happening, the need for those cases should be self-evident.

Camera Height. Sets the camera scale to be a specific height on a specific frame. The scene must already be properly oriented! Typically used when the camera is on a dolly, so the height above floor level is known.

Distance to Tracker. Sets the camera scale. Use when you know a tape-measure distance from the camera to a specific tracker on a specific frame of the imagery, ie similar to a focus distance.

Set Heading. Spins the scene about a vertical axis so that two given trackers are pointing in a given heading direction. The ground plane must already be oriented

(2 of 3 rotational axes). For example, two trackers along the centerline of a road; from satellite imagery we see the road runs northeast.

Set Horizon. Two horizon trackers are made level on a given frame, and also the heading is set to aim the average of them to the back of the scene.

Set Path 1f. Sets the position and orientation (or a subset thereof) of the camera or object path on any specific frame to specific coordinates that you enter (possibly by manually positioning the camera/object). Be sure to turn on "Move whole scene." You must have a previous scene sizing constraint!
